Malaysia has sought to position itself as a country in responding to modern slavery or human trafficking since it recognised trafficking as a major issue that impacts Malaysia both domestically and internationally. Although the crime had long begun, it started to gain attention in 2007 after being assessed by the United States (US) government through the Trafficking in Persons (TIP) report (Zarina et al. 2023).
